Recent events

We have been involved in a number of events in the first few months of 2013. The events have covered many topics, including financial difficulty, natural disasters, industry codes, general insurance and FOS processes.

Here is a sample of where we have been in the last few months.

Member Engagement

Introduction to the new ePayments code: Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane

We held three half-day seminars in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane on the introduction of the new ePayments code. These sessions were designed to assist banks, credit unions and building societies that are currently subscribed to the existing EFT Code to understand the new provisions and what the implications are for them.

General Insurance Open Forums

We hosted forums in Melbourne and Sydney in the last few months which gave us an opportunity to discuss FOS Determinations and share insights with our members. The forums are always well-attended, and members enjoy the opportunity to submit topics and individual FOS Determinations for discussion. They also enjoy the opportunity to ask questions of the FOS Panel on the day.

Community Engagement

FCAQ Conference and FOS Forum: Surfers Paradise QLD

FOS Forums are designed for, and with, consumer representatives. The forums help us to deliver information about FOS’s jurisdiction, dispute lodgement and processes that help consumer representatives understand what they need to do in order to get the best outcome for their client’s situation. In Queensland we focused on the issues of Financial Difficulty, General Insurance and Responsible Lending.

Community forums: Dunalley (bushfires) and Bundaberg (floods)

THE Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) hosted insurance forums in Bundaberg and Dunalley for policyholders affected by the recent flooding in Queensland and bushfires in Tasmania.

The forum covered key aspects of the recovery process for insured property owners, including claims handling and management, claims assessment, site clean-up, claims settlement options and dispute resolution. The forums were attended by the ICA, insurance company representatives and claims staff, FOS and Queensland Legal Aid.

Moneycare 20th Anniversary Conference – Sydney

In April FOS was a part of the Moneycare 20th Anniversary Conference. Moneycare has been providing financial counselling and related services to many thousands of people in financial difficulty and crisis for over two decades, and the conference gave us the opportunity to present to the Moneycare audience on the role of FOS. We were also able to give some tips about getting the most out of working with us.

Industry Engagement

Insurance reform advisory group

This is an ongoing forum for the peak bodies that represent industry and consumers. The group regularly exchanges views with the Minister and other Government representatives about issues in the insurance field that should be considered for reform – including legislative change or changes to regulatory or industry practices.

Code reference group with the ICA

This ongoing forum was established by the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) for its members to exchange information and views with the FOS Code team about their Code monitoring activities.
