Under the spotlight: June Smith

After heading up FOS’s Code Compliance and Monitoring Team for three and a half years, Dr June Smith has recently taken up the appointment of Lead Ombudsman (Investments and Advice).

“The intersection between legal, corporate and ethical obligations is where I have spent a lot of my time.  But the concepts of justice and fairness are what drew me to the law in the first place. How the law is administered and how justice can be accessed by everyone, have always been very important to me,” June said.

Dr June Smith has a wealth of experience in the financial planning and related sectors, well-developed relationships with regulators, industry and consumer groups and a significant track record as an independent decision maker. June is well recognised for her work developing the role of codes of practice to improve customer service, along with her efforts in promoting professional standards and business ethics in the financial advice industry.

“It is early days, but I’m really enjoying settling into my new role. I am looking forward to engaging with our stakeholders in the Investment, Life insurance, and Superannuation and Advice sectors in particular, to continue to improve the experience of both applicants and FSP’s under our new streamlined dispute processes and to share our insight into how disputes might be prevented.”

Prior to becoming Lead Ombudsman (Investments and Advice), June was CEO of the Code Compliance Monitoring Committee for the Code of Banking Practice and General Manager of Code Compliance and Monitoring at FOS.  In these roles she worked across the retail banking, customer owned banking, general insurance and insurance broking sectors.

June has a PhD in Law from Victoria University, specialising in professional and business ethics and organisational decision–making within financial services organisations. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Melbourne. Her external appointments have ranged from Independent Chair, Code Compliance and Monitoring Committee, Australian Travel Agents Scheme to Advisory Member, Member Compliance Committee, Financial and Consumer Rights Council of Victoria and Victoria University Alumni Ambassador.
